France’s Leonie Periault claimed a dominant victory at WTCS Hamburg. Following a swim and bike leg where a large pack containing all the pre-race favorites stayed together, Periault proved simply untouchable once her running shoes hit the pavement.
The swim section initially stretched the field, largely thanks to the blistering pace of Italy’s Bianca Seregni. She exited the water in 9:24, creating the first significant gaps of the day. However, those differences quickly dissolved on the bike, as nearly the entire field neutralized the breaks to form a massive lead group containing all the major contenders.
The real race truly ignited during the run, which was contested at an exceptionally high tempo through the streets of Hamburg. Leonie Periault, renowned for her formidable running prowess, tackled the 5-kilometer leg as if it were one continuous sprint.
Only one athlete managed to bridge the gap for a time – Germany’s Lisa Tertsch, last year’s WTCS overall champion and the current European Standard Distance champion. However, even Tertsch was forced to let a small gap open after the 2.5-kilometer mark already. When Tertsch started glancing over her shoulder a few meters later, the outcome was clear: Periault was in a league of her own and surged ahead to claim the gold.
Periault crossed the finish line to win WTCS Hamburg in a time of 55:51. Tertsch secured second place just five seconds later in 55:56, while Sweden’s Tilda Månsson rounded out the podium in third with a time of 56:03.
