Canada’s Cody Beals and America’s Sarah True pulled off a strong run at yesterday’s Ironman 70.3 Eagleman, which saw them race to first place and claim the gold.
During the swim part, Beals missed the group with the fastest men, but given his deficit of only sixteen seconds, he was right in the mix. It was Potts who was first out of the water, noting a swim time of 23:23 minutes. On the bike Beals, Potts and Metzler found each other. The three were leading by 1:15 minute once they racked their bikes back in T2. On the run, Metzler placed an attack, but Beals soon leveled up. Halfway through the run, Beals had taken over and led with just a few seconds. At the finish, that gap had widened to over a minute. Beals claimed the win, Metzler took second (+1:03) and Potts finished in third (+3:00).
With a 40-second gap to the first woman – Rachel Zilinskas (USA) – True had some work to do after the swim. Although she managed to close that gap down to just 10 seconds, she couldn’t ride to the first place, because that’s where Sonja Catano (USA) was. On the run, True moved straight to the front. Running 1:19:57 hour, True was first across the finish line, outrunning Canada’s Tamara Jewett (+1:13) and America’s Sophie Watts (+1:42), who had also moved up during that final discipline.
