America’s Jason West just blasted to the victory at Ironman 70.3 Augusta. It was fellow American Trevor Foley who showed to be West’s strongest competitor of the day, as he finished second 48 seconds later. Justin Metzler completed the complete American podium (+5:01).
West and Metzler found a spot in the first swim group that was out of the water after 21:12 minutes, while Foley was 1:53 minute behind after this first discipline. During the 90K bike part, Metzler and West managed to stay in the first group, and Foley impressively bridged the gap to that same group.
It meant all eventual podium finishers started the run at the same time. Initially, it seemed like Foley had the best run legs of the day, but halfway through the run, West took over the lead. West ended up running 1:07:24 hour. Foley crossed the line within a minute and noted a time of 1:08:22 hour on the half-marathon. Metzler couldn’t keep up with their run speed and settled for third about five minutes later.
