Another world-class athlete within the sport announcing his retirement: after it was Daniela Ryf recently, it is now the turn of Spain’s Javier Gómez Noya. The multiple World and European Champion let it be known that it is not an easy decision, but the only right one to quit after this season.

Gómez Noya is considered one of the most successful triathletes of his generation, thanks in part to his five world titles Olympic Distance, two IM 70.3 world titles, and several European titles at various distances. In addition, Gómez Noya is a multiple Spanish champion at various distances and finished second at the London Olympics in 2012.

“I love our sport and I love training everyday, but my body has been struggling to cope with the amount of load that is required to be able to be competitive at the highest level. My body has been pushed to its limits for many years and I have had a career that not even in my craziest dreams I could have imagined but I think it’s time to take a step back.”
