The 2024 Optimism Cal Tri Newport Dunes, billed as ‘the world’s longest-running triathlon at the same location’, will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2024.
Hosted at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina, the event is set to attract around 2,000 participants and serves as the Cal Tri Events National Championship Race.
Originally founded in 1978 as the Human Race Triathlon, the historic race has become a fixture over the years. Athletes aged 7 to 82 from across 30 US states and 7 countries are expected to compete in 21 event options this November.
Racing options include: triathlon, triathlon relay, run-bike-run, swim-bike, swim-run, swim, and run, with sprint and Olympic distances available. Categories for youth participants ensure the race is open to all experience levels.
The Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina will host the swim and run portions of the race, while the cycling route will take athletes along scenic Back Bay Drive and Eastbluff Drive. Spectators can enjoy the coastal backdrop of Newport Beach while cheering on participants.
John Wayne Airport (SNA) is just four miles from the race venue, providing easy access for out-of-state and international athletes. The location also offers proximity to popular Orange County attractions, including Disneyland and Balboa Island.
Cal Tri Events adds that community involvement plays a key role in the event, with volunteers encouraged to participate. For every volunteer, donations will be made to UC Irvine Sailing & Rowing, contributing to Cal Tri Events’ goal of raising US$50,000 for local non-profits.
