Challenge Wānaka has been confirmed as the host of the 2026 New Zealand Middle Distance Triathlon Championship, with the Gallagher Insurance Challenge Wānaka Half serving as an official qualifier for the 2026 World Triathlon Multisport Championships.

The announcement follows the release of the 2025-26 Tri NZ Suzuki Series calendar, which outlines the national championship pathway for athletes aiming to represent New Zealand internationally.

The 2026 edition of Challenge Wānaka is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, and will mark the 20th anniversary of the event.

First held in 2007 with just over 80 athletes, Challenge Wānaka has grown into one of New Zealand’s best-known triathlon events. The course, which runs along the shores of Lake Wānaka and under the Southern Alps, is widely recognised for its scenery and strong local support.

Race Director Jane Sharman said “We’re honoured to be hosting the National Middle Distance Championship in 2026 – and even more so in our 20th year.

“Athletes will be racing for a national title and the chance to represent New Zealand at the World Championships. It’s a proud moment for our team, our community, and everyone who has been part of Challenge Wānaka’s journey.”

Alongside the half-distance race, the Challenge Wānaka Aquabike will also return in 2026, providing a swim-bike option on the same date. Early bird entries are now open for both events.
