In a race packed with drama, constant lead changes, and nail-biting gaps, Sweden’s Rasmus Svenningsson emerged as the winner of Ironman Chattanooga. The final podium was decided by less than two minutes, underscoring just how competitive the day turned out to be.
From the opening meters, the race dynamics were shaped by several strong groups forming in both the swim and bike. Eventually, it was Svenningsson, Pieter Heemeryck, Jesper Svensson, and Cameron Wurf who established themselves at the front. The quartet pushed the pace for much of the bike leg, until Heemeryck faltered around the 120 km mark and drifted back.
With 20 km left on the bike, Jesper Svensson also lost contact, leaving Wurf and Svenningsson to charge into T2 together. Jesper Svensson arrived about a minute behind, with Trevor Foley three minutes down and Thor Bendix Madsen a further three minutes back. By then, Heemeryck had slipped to sixth, carrying nearly eight minutes of deficit.
The marathon brought even more fireworks. Wurf and Svenningsson initially ran stride for stride, but both Foley and Jesper Svensson bridged up, creating a four-man front pack within the first 10 km – separated by barely 30 seconds. Midway through the run, Jesper Svensson was the first to crack, falling over two minutes back. That’s when Svenningsson made his decisive move, unleashing a surge that Wurf and Foley simply couldn’t answer.
From there, the Swede never looked back. His lead wasn’t huge, but it was enough. Wurf secured second place with a steady run, while Foley and Jesper Svensson traded blows for the final podium spot. Ultimately, Foley edged it in the closing kilometers.
