It was a moment that caught many of the thousands of Age Groupers by surprise this weekend on the run course at Challenge Sir Bani Yas. Alongside the volunteers at an aid station stood none other than Pieter Heemeryck himself, handing out water, sports drink, and nutrition to fellow competitors.
Straight after finishing the race – where the Belgian pro athlete delivered a strong performance to claim fourth place – Heemeryck returned to the course still wearing his trisuit, this time not as a contender, but as a supporter. From behind the aid station table, he helped keep athletes hydrated as they pushed through the final kilometers of their race:
