All eyes were on Kristian Blummenfelt ahead of Ironman New Zealand, but the Norwegian’s first race of the 2026 season did not unfold the way he had hoped. Mechanical problems and ongoing struggles meant he was far from the dominant athlete fans are used to seeing. Meanwhile, Trevor Foley delivered an outstanding performance, taking the victory in 7:46:44.
A lead group formed quickly during the swim. Pierre Le Corre (48:11), Robert Huisman, Kyle Smith, Sam Osborne, David Martin, and Henrik Goesch all exited the water within twenty seconds of each other. Other pre-race favorites, including Blummenfelt and Frederic Funk, conceded a gap of more than a minute and a half. Foley came out nearly four minutes behind the leaders in 14th place.
The race truly came alive on the bike. Positions shifted frequently as the big names began to move toward the front. However, Blummenfelt ran into trouble early: part of his aero bars broke, forcing him to ride for an extended period with just one aerobar. Despite the setback, he still managed to return to T2 in third place. Kyle Smith had been the most impressive on the bike, while Funk also rode strongly to start the marathon in second. Smith began the run with nearly a four-minute lead over Funk and almost six minutes over Blummenfelt. Foley had worked his way up to fifth but remained about six minutes back.
Blummenfelt’s difficulties continued on the run. As has happened in several of his Long Distance races, he began vomiting in the early kilometers, and what followed was a tough marathon in which he steadily lost time and positions.
At the front, Smith initially looked untouchable and extended his lead through the early stages of the marathon. But Foley began to close the gap. By halfway, Foley had already moved into second place, though Smith still held a cushion of more than four minutes.
From that point on, the momentum shifted dramatically. Around the 28-kilometer mark, Foley caught and passed Smith to take the lead. Smith then completely unraveled with cramping and would eventually fade to 11th place.
Foley powered to the finish to claim a memorable victory in 7:46:44. A strong run carried Pierre Le Corre to second in 7:48:26, while Matt Hanson rounded out the podium in 7:50:39. Blummenfelt finished sixth at +14:18 minutes.
