Spectators barely had time to blink before the battle for gold and silver was decided, but in the end it was Jackie Hering who claimed victory on home soil at Ironman 70.3 Dallas–Little Elm. After an exciting race that remained undecided until the closing meters, the American star managed to overtake Germany’s Anna Buettner just before the finish line.
Swim Shortened by Weather
Athletes had to adjust immediately at the start of the race when poor weather and strong currents forced organizers to shorten the professional swim from 1,900 meters to just 350 meters. As a result, the field remained tightly packed exiting the water, and the gaps between athletes stayed small throughout much of the bike leg.
Tight Race on the Bike
A large group of women remained within striking distance during the bike segment, setting up a competitive run. When the athletes started the half-marathon, it was Annamarie Strehlow who led the field onto the course. Close behind were contenders such as Emma Skaug, Minttu Hukka, Vittoria Lopes, Samantha Skold, and Adele Likin.
However, none of them could match the pace set by Buettner, who quickly surged to the front of the race, with Hering staying close behind.
Final Kilometers Turn the Race
For much of the run, Buettner held a steady advantage of around 20–30 seconds. Even at the 18-kilometer mark, the German athlete appeared to have the race under control.
But the momentum shifted dramatically in the closing stages. Over the final three kilometers, Hering chipped away at the gap second by second. With the finish line in sight, she finally caught and passed Buettner to secure a thrilling victory.
