Virtually all Short Distance races – from WTCS to World Triathlon Cups to Continental Cups – are behind a paywall on triathlonlive.tv. It is not that an annual subscription is extremely expensive, as you can watch an entire season of racing for just a few bucks, but according to reigning Olympic Champion Alex Yee, this is nevertheless a bad situation. “When I was growing up, World Series racing was on the BBC. I could just turn it on and watch my heroes. Now it’s stuck behind a paywall, which I think is a real shame.”
Yee made his statements in a conversation with TRI247, at a time when there is already more and more focus on livestreams and broadcasting rights within the sport of triathlon. While middle- and long-distance triathlons can often be watched via free livestreams – especially those from Ironman and Challenge Family – the exact opposite is true for World Triathlon races. “Even though I think creating that accessibility and that relatability is really important.”
