Kristian Blummenfelt may decide to skip the Ironman 70.3 World Championship and instead focus entirely on Challenge Roth and the Ironman World Championship on Kona, the Norwegian athlete revealed in his latest YouTube video.
For many triathletes, this news will likely be welcomed. Among them is Jelle Geens, who is hoping to win the Ironman 70.3 World Championship for a third consecutive time. Last year, Geens narrowly defeated Blummenfelt in a thrilling sprint finish.
Blummenfelt has already enjoyed a busy season. He began the year at Ironman New Zealand, where mechanical problems prevented him from achieving the result he had hoped for. Since then, however, he has returned to top form, claiming victories at Ironman 70.3 Geelong, Ironman 70.3 Oceanside, and Ironman Texas. His running performances have been particularly impressive, including half-marathon splits of 1:06 and 1:07, as well as a full marathon in 2:30.
According to Blummenfelt, there is still more speed to come. In the video, he explains that he believes he can continue improving as he builds toward the biggest races of the season.
While Gustav Iden and Casper Stornes are planning to compete at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Nice, Blummenfelt remains undecided. He is keeping open the possibility of traveling directly to Kona following his training camp in the Alps, where he plans to spend significant time both before and after Challenge Roth.
