Simply participating in the Olympic Games will from now on – or rather, retroactively starting from the Winter Games earlier this year – earn athletes 10.000 dollar. This is one of the outcomes of an International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting that took place in Lausanne.
Discussions had been ongoing for some time about providing Olympic athletes with a bit more financial security, and according to the IOC, an average of around 14,000 athletes will qualify for this contribution after every Summer and Winter Games. Naturally, this also applies to all triathletes competing in the Olympic triathlon at the Summer Games, starting in two years in Los Angeles.
The allowance will be paid because, according to the IOC, “all athletes have had to make sacrifices and work hard for years to reach the Olympic stage.”
