World Triathlon has reached the highest governance tier (Group A1) for the first time in the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Sixth Governance Review. Scoring 210 out of a maximum 240 points, the federation marked a 12-point improvement from its 2024 assessment.

With this result, World Triathlon joins 13 other major international sports federations in the top group, including World Athletics, FIFA, and World Aquatics.

Key Assessment Details

The independent review, moderated by sports governance consultancy I Trust Sport, evaluated 36 member federations across 60 indicators divided into five core categories:

  • Transparency: High marks for publishing financial accounts, organizational structures, and board decisions.
  • Democracy: Recognized for active athlete representation and clear decision-making frameworks.
  • Integrity: Strong performance driven by safeguarding protocols, conflict-of-interest procedures, and gender equality programs.
  • Development & Sustainability: Key progress in this area secured the federation’s promotion to the top tier.
  • Control Mechanisms

Areas for Improvement

While all full ASOIF members surpassed the baseline target score of 150, the report highlighted several systemic areas for future development across the wider sporting community. For World Triathlon, these upcoming priorities include:

  • Strengthening risk management and due diligence.
  • Enhancing the monitoring and auditing of distributed funds.
  • Broadening diversity within elected and appointed roles beyond gender equality alone.
  • Ensuring newly introduced governance policies are fully integrated into daily operations.

Leadership Perspective

“Reaching the A1 group for the very first time is a truly proud moment for World Triathlon,” said World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany. “This result is the product of years of hard work, dedication, and a genuine commitment to the highest standards of governance across our federation.”

What is particularly striking is that this new report makes no mention whatsoever of the corruption during the latest World Triathlon elections, which was confirmed just last year.
