After over a decade of battling at the highest tier of endurance sports, Danish triathlon star Maja Stage Nielsen is officially stepping away from professional competition. The 38-year-old took to Instagram to share that while her love for training remains strong, her competitive drive on race day has completely faded.
A Decorated Career Reaches Its Finale
Stage Nielsen leaves behind an impressive legacy in long-course racing. Highlights of her career include a victory at the 2023 Apfelland Triathlon alongside a remarkable collection of podium finishes at flagship Ironman events – including second-place results in Mallorca (2016), Lanzarote (2019), Cozumel (2019), Texas (2023), and Hamburg (2024).
However, top-tier results became harder to come by in recent times. Her final podium appearance came at last season’s Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland. Following that runner-up finish, she went 13 races without a top-three result, culminating in a withdrawal during the bike segment at IM New Zealand to kick off her 2026 campaign.
Opening up about her decision to call it a career, Stage Nielsen posted:
“Well, that’s it… It is time for me to admit that I’m done racing triathlon. I have known it for a while. Many of you probably had guessed it too.
“I just wasn’t brave enough to say it out loud. Because it’s kinda hard for me to accept that I don’t want to race anymore. Sport is equally tough and rewarding! And being an athlete is all I have ever known. It has challenged me, shaped me, and given me more than I ever dreamed of.
“I have learnt to love swimming, I love biking, I love running and I (still) love to do it all day every day – except on race day! I have absolutely no “race mode” left… and I’m done being the athlete showing up just to be there. I have done that too many times already. It has never been who I am, and it’s not who I want to be(come).”
Fitness Intact as a New Chapter Begins
Despite stepping away from the pro triathlon circuit, her engine clearly hasn’t slowed down. Shortly after her DNF in New Zealand, Stage Nielsen threw down a blistering 2:44:04 at the Copenhagen Marathon, placing 17th overall among women.
Even with world-class fitness, navigating life after elite competition presents a brand-new hurdle – one she is ready to face head-on.
“It’s no secret that I’ve always loved the process more than the result. The training, the daily routines, the small improvements – that’s what I think is fun and what truly made me happy,” she added. “BUT this new process is probably the scariest I’ve ever started.
“I have no idea what comes next. I only know I still have dreams and goals to chase. I know sport will always be part of my life. I know I need to find a job, and I know it’s time to get started!
