The word is that the event is going ahead, it’s nearing full capacity and, to top all that, Challenge Cancun will feature one of the sport’s biggest names, Javier Gomez.
The inaugural Challenge Cancun race took place in 2019, with last year’s race cancelled due to the global pandemic. This year’s race is scheduled for May 2 and, according to race officials, is nearing “its maximum participation quota” of competitors.
Heading the pro field is Gomez, a five-time ITU world champion and two-time Ironman 70.3 world champ who also has an Xterra world title on his resume. The 45-person pro field will be looking to earn their share of the US$15,000 prize purse. In addition to Gomez, the field will include Ironman champion Michael Weiss and top Spanish long-distance athlete Saleta Castro.
The beautiful race course features a 1.9 km swim in the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea at Playa Langosta beach, a multi-lap 90 km bike ride that ends in the center of Cancun, finishing with a three-lap run that finishes in front of Nichupte Lagoon.
