Egypt, the land of pyramids and the Red Sea, will welcome its very first Ironman 70.3 event next year. The town of Hurghada – near the Red Sea – will host thousands of athletes on November 19, 2021. It will be the fourth Ironman 70.3 event on African soil.
“Egypt is a country full of history and today, we are celebrating a truly historical event. Over the years, Hurghada has developed from a small fisherman’s village into a world-famous touristic hotspot and we feel proud and honored to bring Ironman racing to this wonderful location”, says Stefan Petschnig, Ironman Managing Director of Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Flat and fast
A 1,900 m, one-loop swim course will take athletes around the Sahel Hasheesh Bay, well known among divers for its beautiful coral reefs, while the white sand beaches next to it are equally adored by tourists. After wiping the salty water out of their eyes, athletes will hop on their bikes to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the desert during a flat 90-km loop. The day ends with a two-loop half marathon that passes various tourist hotspots.
30 slots for Age Group athletes
With mild temperatures ranging from 21 to 26 C in the month of November, there is no need to be afraid of burning African-desert heat. The event will offer 30 qualifying slots for the December, 2022 Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand.
