It has been quite a year for Olympic gold medalist Kristian Blummenfelt, who has just announced that he’ll be competing at Ironman Cozumel in November, his first full-distance race. Even after his gold-medal performance in Tokyo, Blummenfelt had made it clear that he wanted to compete at the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii this year, and planned to race in Frankfurt just a few weeks after his race in Tokyo.
When Ironman invited the Norwegian to compete in Kona, it meant he didn’t have to race in Frankfurt, allowing him to focus on the World Triathlon Series Final in Edmonton, which he won. He then set his sights on the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, but a flat tire sidelined his hopes to compete for that title. The following week he accepted a wild card spot for Super League Malibu, where he won the first two races of the Eliminator event.
Blummenfelt has also agreed to be part of the “Sub 7 and Sub 8 Project” along with Alistair Brownlee, Lucy Charles-Barclay and Nicola Spirig which will be held at some point next year, too.
The Norwegian star, who is renowned for his hard training regimen, will head to Cozumel on Nov. 21 for his much-anticipated full-distance debut. Based on the excellent form he’s displayed for much of this year, it promises to be an exciting debut.
