In Tokyo, earlier this year, he campaigned for a spot on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, but had to relinquish that spot to Spanish basketball player Pau Gasol. Alistair Brownlee may have missed his chance to join the IOC, but today he was elected as a new member of the Athletes’ Commission of the European Olympic Committee. He is one of six new members for the Summer Olympics.
“I’m honored to be elected onto the EOC athletes’ commission,” the 33-year-old Brownlee commented. “I’d like to thank the Athletes’ Commissions of Europe for putting their faith in me and the BOA (British Olympic Association, ed.) Athletes’ Commission for their support. I’m looking forward to working hard to represent Europe’s Olympic athletes.”
Ben Hawes, chair of the BOA Athletes’ Commission, which Brownlee automatically joins because of his position at the EOC, welcomed Brownlee saying: “Congratulations to Alistair on his appointment to the EOC Athletes’ Commission. As a double Olympic Champion Alistair made a huge contribution to Team GB and the Olympic movement and I have no doubt he will be an exceptional representative for the EOC in ensuring that athletes voices from around Europe are heard and recognized.”
