Last week four top triathletes announced an ambitious endeavor: the Pho3nix SUB7 / Pho3nix SUB8 project, in which they aim to finish a full-distance race – drafting allowed – in under seven hours (men) or eight hours (women). In the spring of 2022 Lucy Charles, Nicola Spirig, Alistair Brownlee and Kristian Blummenfelt will take on this extreme challenge. They shared their ideas about the project in the the videos below.

“I feel like I’ve gained a ton of experience in the Ironman distance in a relatively short amount of time, and I’m still pretty young in the sport, so I’ve got tons of time to work and improve. I still don’t feel like we have seen anywhere near my capabilities on this distance,” said Charles.

While the young British athlete is relatively new to the sport, Spirig has been performing at the highest level for many years. “Sub8 for me is a huge challenge and a really exciting project,” Spirig said. “To be able to inspire the next generation and to help kids to move and be more active is a great cause, and I’m really excited. I think every huge challenge seems impossible at the first moment, but to have the chance to try it and make the impossible possible is a great honor.”
