World Triathlon announced to postpone the bidding deadline for host cities of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) Finals in 2023 and 2024. The same goes for the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships in 2023 and 2024, and the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in 2024. Recently the triathlon governing body shared the exact date of the multisport festival in 2022.

Also, the applications for cities that would like to host a WTCS-race, World Triathlon Cup, World Triathlon para event, World Triathlon Multisport Cup or World Triathlon Winter Championships & Cup in 2022 remains open.

Especially the WTCS-races are considered a premium event within short-distance triathlon. “Elite triathletes now compete in these events in search of the World Triathlon Championship title. Since its launch in 2009, the profile of the World Triathlon Championship Series has grown rapidly, establishing itself as the pinnacle of Olympic and Sprint distance triathlon racing across the globe”, World Triathlon states.

According to World Triathlon, the organization of a WTCS-race has a lot to offer to host cities. The event attracts millions of people through an international live stream and via television broadcasts. Additionally, it attracts a lot of national and international guests in the days leading up to a race. “They carry a substantial prize purse, have significant media, television and internet coverage and are also attractive for tourist destinations and major cities”, World Triathlon mentions.

WTCS Final

For the biggest event of all – the WTCS Finals – the bidding process remains open. That means that so far for 2023 and 2024 no host cities have been selected. In previous years the WTCS Finals took place in London, Budapest, Beijing, Auckland, Chicago, Gold Coast and Lausanne. In 2021 and 2022 Edmonton and Abu Dhabi will host the series’ finals.
