Great Britain takes victory in European Championship Mixed Team Relay

Benson as the last athlete for Great Britain.

Sian Rainsley, Samuel Dickinson, Olivia Mathias and Gordon Benson have just won the European Championships Mixed Team Relay for Great Britain. After an exciting battle they stayed ahead of their German and Russian competitors.

For a long time the race was evenly matched, but in the third heat – four athletes swam 250 m, did a 6 km bike and ran 2.25 km as a relay team – Russia dropped out first. Not much later Great Britain accelerated once again, which was too much for Germany as well.

Still, Jonas Breinlinger, the last athlete to run for Germany, came very close to catching Benson, the last British athlete in action. But, during the final run, Benson held on to claim the European title for Great Britain in a time of 1:09:18. Eighteen seconds later, Germany was second and fifty seconds later, Russia took the bronze. France, Italy and the Czech Republic followed in fourth, fifth and sixth.
