Doesn’t this pool look dreamy? The inventors of the New York City + Pool want to encourage people to swim and to take care of the water quality of the river surrounding Manhattan island. They came up with the innovative idea of building a floating pool that filters the water. The pool isn’t there yet, but the enthusiastic team behind + Pool works hard to make this dream a reality.
“New York is an incredible place to live. You can do almost anything here. Anything, except swim in the river”, the organization explains on their website. “Manhattan is an island — literally surrounded by water — but we haven’t been able to swim safely in the river for decades. It started with a simple idea: instead of trying to clean the entire river, what if you started by cleaning it piece by piece? And what if you could change how New Yorkers see their rivers, just by giving them a chance to swim in it? + Pool will clean more than 600,000 gallons of river water every single day. No chemicals, no chlorine, just natural river water.”
The pool does so by using a water-filtering system in the walls of the pool. “+ Pool strives to reclaim the river as a recreational resource for the city, while educating the public about issues affecting our water quality.”
And for who’s worried about bumping into people when swimming laps in this pool: the + Pool has four different pools, so that won’t happen. As you can see below there is one part for kids to swim in, one part for people to practice sports in, one part to relax and finally – most importantly for New York City’s triathletes – a pool for swimming laps.
