Death of an athlete during the swim overshadows IM 70.3 Pucon

Spain’s Javier Gomez just managed to get away with the win at Ironman 70.3 Pucon, but the first Ironman event of 2022 is overshadowed by the tragic death of an Age Group athlete. The man, whose name hasn’t been mentioned for privacy reasons, was noticed by a fellow athlete during the swim part. The other athlete called for help from the rescue services, after which the athlete was taken to the hospital.

“During the swim part of Ironman 70.3 Pucon an athlete was given medical attention and brought to a nearby hospital where they continued treatment. This was after our rescue services had been alarmed. We are saddened to announce the death of this athlete and express our deepest condolences to family and friends. We shall continue to support them and respect their privacy while they go through this difficult time. We would like to thank the triathlete who helped to take care of the man, the safety staff en the first responders who provided the right medical help as soon as they could”, the organization declared in an official statement.
