He’s a five-time World Triathlon world champion, he’s a silver Olympic medalist and won many races: Javier Gomez. The Spanish star triathlete who’s had a long and successful career in short-distance racing is moving to the long-distance as of this year, he announced last week. That means the World Triathlon chapter closes. Through ten photos, World Triathlon – formerly the ITU – celebrates Gomez’ amazing performances.

“”I raced ITU/World Triathlon for 20 years, and it made me the athlete I am today”, Gomez said. “I raced the most talented triathletes in the world, of different generations, met amazing people, and I’m honored to be the athlete with more world titles and more wins in the sport. It was an incredible journey and I would like to thank everyone who was part of it.”

World Triathlon wishes Gomez good luck with this next step in his career: “Congratulations on an extraordinary World Triathlon career, Javier. We look forward to following the next chapter.”
