Valentin Wernz takes the day at European Championship Olsztyn

A big win for Germany’s Valentin Wernz, today, at the Europe Triathlon Championship in Olsztyn. After 23:27 minutes – 300 meters of swimming, 8 km of cycling and 2000 meters of running – Wernz got to break the tape. He shared the podium with Britain’s Barclay Izzard and France’s Anthony Pujades, who took second and third respectively.

Only a few seconds down to the leader, Wernz reached his bike. That saw him end up in the first group, which was quite small initially. However, after a few km many athletes caught up with the front, creating a pack of about twelve athletes.

With twelve athletes hungry to take gold or a podium spot, everything came down to the 2K run. While a handful of men stayed together for most of the run part, Wernz made it clear that nobody was getting between him and the victory during the final meters. After the German athlete celebrated his win, Izzard settled in second and Pujades took third.
