At the Sailfish Night of the Year, which takes place annually – normally at least, because the past two years the gala night did not take place because of COVID – Gustav Iden and Lucy Charles were named athletes of the year.

Gustav Iden owes that honor mainly to the fact that he crowned himself World Champion at this year’s Ironman World Championships in Kona. Lucy Charles finished third there, but did become World Champion at Challenge Family’s The Championship earlier this year.

It was striking to note that the Sailfish Night of the Year – which always takes place in Germany and receives worldwide attention – was much less on the radar of media.

During the Sailfish Night of the Year, the two German athletes of the year are named as well. This year best German athletes were Sebastian Kienle and Laura Philipp, with Kienle indicating that he actually felt Patrick Lange deserved the award.

Challenge Roth was named best Long Distance race for the 12th time.
