It is a particularly big disappointment for the athletes who were supposed to start today at Challenge Egnazia, because the first edition of the race that was supposed to start today at 9:00 a.m. will not take place. The weather is severe and the authorities have not given permission for the race to go ahead.
There is a tremendously strong wind in Egnazia, so last night it was already decided to cancel the swim anyway. This morning, however, it was also decided that it is not safe enough for cycling and therefore the entire event is now cancelled. According to the organization, they looked into the possibility of moving the race by one day – tomorrow the weather is expected to be much better – or turning it into a duathlon, but both options turned out to be unfeasible. A duathlon today would also not be safe enough – due to the strong winds – and tomorrow there will be a shortage of people to properly and safely close the course. “And the safety of athletes is always the most important to us,” the organization said in a statement.
