The Barkley Marathons might just have a historic ending. At the time of writing, as many as nine ultrarunners are running in their fourth of five laps: a record. There could be more, as there is about two hours left for everyone on their third lap to start their fourth lap.

Considered the toughest ultrarun in the world, the Barkley Marathons consists of five running laps of about 32 kilometers. However, navigational errors often cause the distance to increase dramatically. Another record this year is that as many as 12 runners completed the so-called Fun Run: to do that, you need to complete three laps within 40 hours.
