With an average pace of 46 kilometers per hour, Swede Robert Kallin almost flew over the bike course of Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz last weekend. It ultimately did not bring him a podium spot, as he fell back considerably during the run, but Kallin did record the fastest bike split ever at a Long Distance: 3:54:33.
The former bike record was held by Magnus Ditlev, who recorded 3:57:54 at Ironman Florida last year. For sure the Ironman Vitoria-Gasteiz bike course wasn’t too short, as Strava data from dozens of participants showed a fair distance of 179.4 kilometers.
Kallin eventually finished sixth after a ‘disappointing run’. Incidentally, he still ran a marathon of 3:03 and that’s after his record-breaking bike split.
