Strava has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Runna, the UK-based app offering personalised running plans and coaching. The deal marks a significant move into the structured training space for Strava, which now has over 150 million registered users across 185 countries.
Founded in 2021 by Dom Maskell and Ben Parker, Runna launched publicly in March 2022 and is now available in more than 180 countries. The app provides subscription-based training programmes and was a 2024 finalist for Apple’s App of the Year.
Its acquisition comes as running continues to grow in popularity – particularly among Gen Z – according to Strava’s Year in Sport data.
Michael Martin, CEO at Strava, stated that the platform recorded nearly 1 billion runs in 2024, with demand for coaching and race preparation growing fast. “Runna’s mission to give every runner a personalised plan to achieve their goal is a perfect fit,” said Martin.
Runna will continue to operate as a standalone product for the foreseeable future. Martin added that Strava plans to invest in growing the Runna team and accelerating the app’s development.
Dom Maskell, co-founder and CEO at Runna, said “We are delighted to become part of Strava as we continue to focus on bringing the world the most customised and personalised training plans available.”
Ben Parker, co-founder, added “Our passion is to give every runner a training plan and access to amazing coaching. This investment allows us to make even more improvements to everything we do at Runna, benefiting runners worldwide.”
According to Strava, the acquisition also reflects its commitment to its developer community. More than 100 training apps currently connect to Strava’s API.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.
