Gwen Jorgensen, Olympic gold medalist and one of the sport’s most iconic figures, has once again stepped up – not only as an athlete but now as a changemaker. In a newly announced partnership with the USA Triathlon Foundation, Jorgensen is turning her focus toward the next generation of triathletes, ensuring that the path into the sport becomes more inclusive and equitable.

For over a decade, Jorgensen has inspired athletes across the globe with her performances and resilience. Now, she’s lending her name and energy to a cause deeply rooted in giving back. Teaming up with her husband Patrick Lemieux and philanthropist Scott Filion, Jorgensen has launched the Gwen Jorgensen Scholarship Fund. Its mission is simple yet powerful: to support children and youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in discovering and pursuing triathlon.

“Triathlon changed my life, and I want to help open that door for the next generation – especially kids who might not have the resources to get started,” said Jorgensen.

Her Olympic victory in Rio 2016 was a defining moment for American triathlon. Dominating the run segment with the fastest 10K split of the day, she etched her name into history as the first U.S. athlete to win Olympic gold in the sport. Since then, her journey has taken her from Olympic podiums to motherhood and a stint in professional running, and now, back to the elite triathlon circuit.

Despite narrowly missing a place on the Paris 2024 Olympic Team – named as an alternate – Jorgensen’s competitive drive remains unwavering. She’s already set her sights on the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Series, showcasing not just athletic grit, but a deep passion for the sport.

“Through this scholarship fund, we’re breaking down financial barriers and making triathlon more accessible. Every child deserves the chance to dream big, and I’m excited to be part of a movement that helps them chase those dreams,” Jorgensen said.

Scott Filion, who has seen firsthand the life-changing effects of scholarship support, shares this commitment. His involvement with the fund reinforces a shared vision of removing socioeconomic barriers that often prevent young athletes from stepping into the multisport world.

The USA Triathlon Foundation – established in 2014 as the charitable arm of USA Triathlon – is proud to stand behind this initiative. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the foundation focuses on three pillars: encouraging youth participation, inspiring pathways to access and inclusion, and igniting Olympic and Paralympic dreams. This new fund aligns seamlessly with its mission to transform lives through swim, bike, and run.

“Gwen has long been an inspiration in our sport – not only for her Olympic gold medal and incredible sustained success at the highest level of the sport, but also for her dedication to growing triathlon and giving back to the next generation,” said Victoria Brumfield, USA Triathlon CEO.

“The USA Triathlon Foundation is honoured to partner with Gwen, Patrick, and Scott Filion to launch this scholarship fund, which will provide meaningful opportunities for young athletes to discover and thrive in triathlon. Together, we are working to make our sport more accessible, inclusive, and welcoming for all.”

As Jorgensen returns to elite competition with renewed determination, her legacy continues to expand – reaching far beyond finish lines, medals, or rankings. Her new mission speaks to something more enduring: giving others the chance to find purpose, passion, and opportunity in triathlon.
