This Sunday, July 20, the storied town of Lake Placid, New York, once again becomes the center of the triathlon world as the Ironman Pro Series rolls into the Adirondack Mountains. Over 80 of the world’s elite professional triathletes will line up at the start of Ironman Lake Placid competing not only for prestige, but also for critical points in the IM Pro Series standings.
With a $125,000 prize purse and up to 5,000 points up for grabs, the stakes are high. Athletes will also be racing for four Ironman World Championship slots per gender – with men aiming for Nice in 2025, and women eyeing the iconic World Championship on Kona.
Lake Placid’s legendary course, one of the oldest IM races in North America, is revered for both its scenic beauty and demanding terrain. Athletes begin with a 2.4-mile swim in the pristine Mirror Lake, often described as one of the cleanest and calmest swim venues on the circuit. The two-loop, 112-mile bike course winds through the Adirondacks, featuring a dramatic descent into Keene and a punishing 11-mile climb through Wilmington Notch, passing the base of Whiteface Mountain.
The race finishes with a tough two-loop marathon that takes athletes past iconic Lake Placid landmarks including the Olympic Ski Jumps and Horse Show Grounds, before heading along River Road. A final uphill push leads competitors back to the heart of town, where they’ll finish on the historic Olympic Oval, the same venue that hosted speed skating at the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.
