For the first time in history, the World Triathlon Women’s Cup Dubai took place today – a World Cup event exclusively for women. With this new format, World Triathlon aims to shine a brighter spotlight on women’s triathlon. Whether that goal was achieved, given the limited field and largely unfamiliar names on the start list, remains open to debate. One thing is clear, however: the victory belonged to Valentina Riasova.

Only fifteen athletes lined up at the start, and roughly thirteen of them were relatively unknown on the international stage. The biggest name – and pre-race favorite – Gwen Jorgensen, was unable to make an impact. She finished sixth, more than a minute behind the winner.

The triumph went to Russia’s Valentina Riasova, who crossed the line in 58:30. Her compatriot Hanna Maksimava secured second place in 58:43, while Hungary’s Dominika Peszleg completed the podium with 59:04.
