After serving a two-year suspension, Tomás Rodríguez Hernández appears to be preparing for a return to competition. A short Instagram Reel posted at the start of the year has reignited debate around one of the most controversial figures in recent triathlon history.

Four words were enough to set the scene buzzing. “Get back to work.” That was the caption Rodríguez Hernández chose for a brief Instagram Reel shared in early January. To many observers, the message seemed unmistakable: the Mexican athlete is counting down the months until his doping suspension expires in June – and he intends to race again.

Two-Year Ban After Positive Test

Rodríguez Hernández’s case sent shockwaves through the sport in the summer of 2024. After a stunning victory at Ironman Texas – highlighted by a marathon course record – he tested positive for clomiphene, a hormone and metabolic modulator listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited substances list.

The International Testing Agency handed down a two-year suspension running from June 6, 2024, to June 5, 2026. All results from Ironman Texas onward were disqualified, with the win reassigned to Patrick Lange, who had originally finished second.

Rodríguez Hernández accepted the sanction. He claimed the positive test was the result of contaminated food, specifically eggs and poultry, an explanation that ultimately failed to convince anti-doping authorities.

Visible, Not Silent

What has set Rodríguez Hernández apart from many athletes in similar situations is his public presence. Rather than retreating from the spotlight, he has remained active on social media, regularly sharing training footage and messages about his mindset. Shortly after the ban was announced, he stated clearly that he had no intention of ending his career.

Before his suspension, confidence was never in short supply. Following his Texas performance, Rodríguez Hernández famously said: “I always prepare to win.” That self-belief, combined with the performance he delivered on race day, is part of what continues to fuel debate around his case.

A Return Under Scrutiny

As of now, no official race announcements have been made. What is certain is that Rodríguez Hernández will be eligible to compete again from June 2026 onward. When he does return, the spotlight will be intense.
