American triathlete Cody Kraut made waves on Instagram last week after posting a self-shot video during Ironman 70.3 Oceanside. In the footage, Kraut was seen pulling numerous energy gels from his trisuit and handing them off to his partner to take home. The stunt has now backfired, as Ironman officials have officially disqualified Kraut and scrubbed his name from the results for unsportsmanlike conduct.

“Maximizing the Entry Fee”

In the original video, a laughing Kraut was filmed discarding gel after gel from his suit. He stated at the time that he wanted to get “maximum value” out of the race, citing the high cost of registration fees as his justification for stockpiling the on-course nutrition.

The post ignited a firestorm of debate online. While some commenters offered minor support for his “rebellion” against rising race costs, the vast majority of the triathlon community criticized the move as theft and a violation of the spirit of the sport.

The Disqualification and a Shift in Narrative

After the video gained traction, Ironman organizers contacted Kraut directly. Following their review, they issued a disqualification (DSQ) based on a breach of conduct rules.

In a follow-up video, Kraut attempted to explain his actions, though his narrative shifted significantly from his initial “value for money” argument. He now claims the act was a form of “protest” against a perceived shift in the Ironman culture. Kraut alleged that the atmosphere at events has become overly competitive and toxic, with athletes focused solely on outdoing one another. According to Kraut, taking the gels was intended to be a statement against this cultural shift.
