He has never biked 180 kilometers before, and he has never run a marathon: it will be quite a hurdle for Jelle Geens. Next week, the Belgian world-class athlete must complete them back-to-back, right after swimming 3.8 kilometers. Geens is making his debut at Ironman Texas and seems not only ready for it but truly excited.
After becoming the Ironman 70.3 World Champion two years in a row, Geens is now doubling his distance. This means different, longer, and sometimes tougher training sessions, which the video below provides a great look into.
“The distance is, of course, the great unknown. I’ve never cycled 180 kilometers. I’ve never run 42 kilometers. Now I have to do it all together in one race. But, precisely because I’ve never done it before, I have the mindset that the sky is the limit.”
