Spain’s Mario Mola has won the World Championship Duathlon in front of his home crowd. In Ibiza, Mola was overwhelmingly the strongest during the runs and thus a more than deserved winner.
Already during the first run – the World Championship consisted of 5 kilometers of running, 20 kilometers of cycling and 2.5 kilometers of running – Mola was clearly the strongest. He therefore returned to T1 on his own, having recorded 14:38 minutes on the first five kilometers. First pursuers were following at over ten seconds.
Even on the bike, Mola initially remained in the lead, but he did not keep that up for 20 kilometers. He saw a large group of eighteen chasers join him after the first kilometers on the bike. From then on, things got exciting: one athlete after another tried to mount an attack, but no one managed to ride away from the group. In the end, then, the leading group started the final run together.
There it was once again Mola who proved to be the strongest: nobody could keep up with him and so Mola ran to a spectacular victory. He took the world title in a time of 51:03 minutes, six seconds ahead of Frenchman Benjamin Choquert. Also French Krilan le Bihan finished third, eight seconds behind the winner.
