While the tragedy was fully complete this year at Ironman Cork – where two athletes lost their lives during the swim – Ironman has now decided not to run the race (as well as Ironman 70.3 Cork) in 2024. Next year will be used for “further healing” and to choose the best future path. In 2025, both events should return to the calendar.
That’s stated by Ironman Ireland on its social media channels. This year’s edition is still being investigated, as shortly after the two deadly accidents it was said by the Irish Triathlon Federation that it had not given permission for the race to go ahead: the sea water would be too wild and thus not safe enough. Ironman denied this, however, stating that it had not received the warning until well after the start of the race. Not much later, Ironman even threatened legal action against the Irish federation.
