The Ironman 70.3 Augusta will continue to be a fixture on the North American triathlon calendar through 2030, thanks to a newly signed five-year extension between IM and the Augusta Sports Council.
The deal ensures stability for one of the region’s most celebrated endurance events, which has welcomed athletes from around the world since its debut in 2009. The renewal comes as especially welcome news after last year’s edition was cancelled due to hurricane conditions, a rare disruption to an event known for its reliability and community support.
“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Augusta for a further five years,” said Scott Langen, Vice President, Operations – North America for Ironman. “The IM 70.3 Augusta race continues to be one of the most popular races in the North American portfolio year after year. We look forward to continuing to build on what we have created here in Augusta since it was first launched in 2009.”
The event’s popularity is clear: each year, around 2,500 athletes descend on Augusta to tackle the course, which features a fast 1.2-mile downriver swim in the Savannah River, a 56-mile bike through rural Georgia, and a 13.1-mile run that winds along the shaded North Augusta Greeneway before finishing in the heart of downtown. The race has generated more than US$76 million in estimated economic impact for the region since its inception.
This year’s race, held last weekend, was won by Jason West and Paula Findlay.
