This Sunday, May 2, the action busts out at Challenge Cancun where a strong field of athletes will enjoy racing under the Mexican sun and in beautiful crystal clear water.
The clear favorite in the men’s field is undoubtedly Spain’s Javier Gómez, who also competed at last year’s Challenge Daytona, but didn’t factor in the battle for a place on the podium. Nevertheless, Gómez is considered one of the best athletes in the world – which is not surprising when you look at his record – so he’ll arrive as the favorite for win and will no-doubt be very motivated for a big day.
Gómez will face some stiff competition, for sure. For example, Swedish Patrick Nilsson, renowned as a fierce competitor, will be at the start. Others to watch include Andy Potts (USA), the men’s defending champion after his win in 2019, Michael Weiss (AUT), while Switzerland’s Ruedi Wild will be another man to watch.
Among the women, New Zealand’s Anneke Jenkins is considered the big favorite to take the win at Challenge Cancun. Due to travel restrictions, the women’s field in Cancun isn’t as packed as the men’s, but that doesn’t mean Jenkins will be able to look forward to an easy day at the office. Local favorites Palmira Alvarez and Adriana Carreno will be at the start and France’s Anne Basso could also provide a surprise. There are also a number of American women at the start, including Annie Kelly, Kimberly Goodell, Sierra Snyder, Katherin Vermann, Nicole Valentine and Natasha van der Merve.
