On April 3, 2022 there will be a couple of Ironman events in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa – in addition to the Ironman African Championship, there will also be a half-distance event. Ironman 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay is now added to a full weekend that includes a Corporate Triathlon Challenge short course race in addition to the two long-distance triathlons.
The first Ironman 70.3 Nelson Mandela Bay race took place in 2004 in preparation for the full-distance race that started the following year. The race has served as the Ironman African Championship for over a decade. The city also hosted the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in 2018.
“The 1.9km swim course will take place at King’s Beach, where the memorable 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship swim took place,” the organization said in a release today. “Athletes will then take on a 90km one loop bike course leading into the city and back through the Bay’s beautiful coastline returning to transition at King’s Beach. Lastly, athletes will take on a two-loop spectator friendly run course up and down Marine Drive along the beachfront, finishing at Hobie Beach opposite the iconic Pier.”
The 70.3 race will be an age group only event and have qualifying slots for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in St. George, Utah next year.
