Ratasepp into the final stretch: 5 full-distance races to go for record-setting 60

Estonia’s Rait Ratasepp is looking to set a new world record for completing 60 full-distance triathlons (3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42.2 km run) on consecutive days. Over the last few months he has set records for 30- and 40-consecutive full-distance tris, and now he is just five full-distance triathlons away from reaching his goal of 60. Over the last 55 days he has swum 209 km, biked 9,900 km and run 2,321 km. He’s averaged 10:57:33 for each triathlon and 3:14:40 for the marathons.

You can read more of our coverage of Ratasepp’s amazing feat here, including the details on the car crash that forced him to ride on a rental bike for almost a week.

Earlier this year we covered James Lawrence’s effort – the man known as the “Iron Cowboy” completed 101 consecutive full-distance races. Ratasepp’s challenge is different in that he won’t be doing any drafting on the bike (Lawrence rode in a group for many of his rides) and will also be following WADA protocols – Lawrence reportedly used IVs to stay hydrated during at least some of his efforts.

Ratasepp has done all this on a challenging course on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. Over the last few days he’s faced some difficult conditions, including rain, which is rare on the island and the roads get very slippery. He’s also faced some stiff winds over the last few days, too, with wind speeds of 10 to 12 m/s, with gusts up to 15 m/s.

Despite all that, Ratasepp appears well on track to complete the challenge on Dec. 3.
