Triathlon popularity has been quietly growing over the past 20 years, the landmark 2000 Olympics saw triathlon first introduced to the the iconic sporting games. Since then more major games have been embracing triathlon, too. A recent announcement from World Triathlon has revealed that the sport will again be on the schedule for the next European Games in 2023 in Krakow-Malopolska, Poland.

Triathlon first appeared at the European Games back in 2015 when the games were held in Baku. For the upcoming races in Poland both men’s and women’s Olympic distance events (1,500 m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run) will take place along with a mixed relay, which is set to make it’s debut in Tokyo.

World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado had this to say on triathlon appearing again at the European Games:

“It is great for our sport and for our organization to be included again in the programme of the European Games. Adding a third medal event, the Mixed Relay, proves that our sport presence is growing, especially in Europe. Providing the top European athletes another major event to compete at is always great news, that I am absolutely convinced that our community, the fans and spectators will love.”
