It all started with a joke, but within days it became more serious, and now it’s official: Jan Frodeno and Lionel Sanders will battle on Jul. 18, 2021. While Sanders initially asked Frodeno to fly to his side of the world – saying he would cover the expenses – it’s now Sanders who will need to travel because the race, referred to as the Tri Battle Royale, will take place in Germany.
These two top athletes will compete over the full-distance: 3.8 km of swimming, 180 km of cycling and 42.2 km of running. It will be a great day for triathlon fans as we will be able to see all the action unfold via a livestream. It would appear that the two have put on a great show – the event was likely in the works, but Frodeno and Sanders have created quite a stir through social media. Frodeno posted a request on Instagram asking his followers to come up with a new challenge. Sanders responded with the idea to fly Frodeno over to Ironman Coeur d’Alene (Jun. 27). While Frodeno ignored the message at first, they made it look like behind the scenes they were busy working on this epic plan.
