The World Triathlon Cross Championships 2021 – taking place on Oct. 30-31 – have been awarded to El Anillo de Extremadura in Spain. “It’s a pleasure for us to return to Anillo de Extremadura, the venue of the first ever Cross Triathlon World Championships and a perfect place that we know that has all the capabilities to host a wonderful event”, World Triathlon President Marisol Casado states in a press release.
“The commitment of this region towards sustainability, sport and tourism will make sure that, once again, these World Championships provide a perfect destination not only for the athletes, but also for their entourage, friends and family to enjoy all that Extremadura has to offer the triathlon community”, she adds.
It’s the third time that the Cross Triathlon World Championships take place in Spain, El Anillo de Extremadura was host of the first edition in 2011 and in 2019 Pontevedra provided us with the World Triathlon Multisport Festival. The World Triathlon Cross Championship would have been part of the Multisport Festival in 2021, but due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions the event in Almere, the Netherlands, is limited to the Long Distance and Aquabike event. For the 2021 World Triathlon Duathlon World Championships Aviles (Spain, Nov. 6-7) was previously selected as the alternative host.
