Hazardous water conditions: no swim at World Championship Xterra

The Xterra World Championships, taking place in Hawaii this weekend, is dealing with a major setback; there won’t be a swim. The organization has just announced that hazardous waters make it impossible to guarantee a safe swim.

The organization speaks of multiple factors which led to the decision, including strong surf, strong currents, heavy rainfall, strong winds, brown water and too much debris in that same water. The one-and-a-half kilometer swim will now be transformed into a 3 kilometer run, after which the athletes will begin their 31 kilometer bike and 11 kilometer run.

Earlier it appeared that defending champion Bradley Weiss would not race, because he is not able to travel.
