Municipality of Barcelona no longer backs Europe Triathlon Cup

The beautiful city of Barcelona makes for a great location for a triathlon, however, the municipality of Barcelona no longer allows the Europe Triathlon Cup to take place in the Spanish city. That means that after two successful editions – one of them won by Olympic champion Kristian Blummenfelt (2020) – the organization will have to pull the plug.

It remains unclear why Barcelona’s municipality no longer allows the event to take place in the city. The call was made rather unexpected. The Spanish triathlon federation FETRI commented to regret the decision: “We look at this situation with the hope to continue our Barcelona project some day in the future, and to continue to fight for our dream to bring a World Triathlon Championship Series race to Barcelona, in order to join the international competition at a moment not too far away from now.”
