2022 was supposed to be a big year for Britain’s Lucy Charles. As one of the best Long-Distance triathletes in our sport, she was a race favorite for both of the Ironman World Championships – St. George and Kona – but also, she looked forward to trying to go Sub-8 on a Long Distance. All that seemed to be impossible when she suffered a serious stress fracture in her hip just before the season kicked off. However, Kona is not off the radar after all! After Charles made a strong comeback at the World Triathlon Long Distance Championship in Samorin and at the PTO US Open, she decided Kona is not off-limits.
“Guess what… I won’t be missing out on another shot at a World Title on the Big Island!”, Charles announced in the video below, adding: “There’s obviously one big thing looming over me, which is trying to win the Ironman World Championship on Kona.” Charles has been a runner-up at the World’s for three years, so she’s got some unfinished business at the magical island. “At the beginning of this year, when I got told that I had this injury, I actually ruled Kona out. Being on the start line this year is a huge win in itself. And I know I will go into the race and give it everything I’ve got. And if it’s not enough to win, it’s not enough.”
