For the first time in history, a woman dipped below 29 minutes in the 10,000 meters. Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet broke the world record yesterday. with a final time of 28:54.14.

Chebet pulverized the world record at the Diamond League Games in Eugene; the previous world record stood at 29:01.03, run three years ago during the FBK Games in Hengelo by Letesenbet Gidey. That Chebet would now break the world record was fairly unexpected. Never before had she run a 10,000 meters outside Kenya, and she was 4.5 minutes faster than her personal record. Afterwards, Chebet commented that she had been feeling strong all day.
